There is that one story told by OSHO. You can surely find it in one of his books or on-line.

There was a master and his student watching lumberjacks cutting a bunch of trees from a yard nearby where they lived. Lumberjacks were working fast, tearing down tree by tree, burning some of the remains.
But there was one tree, that was left alone and none of the lumberjacks was interested in it. It was a big, old tree with wide branches, reaching far around. Why would they ignore such a source of wood?

The student asked the master about this strange fact. They both approached one of the men working there.
"Why are you cutting all the younger trees around and left out this big one here?"
The lumberjack wiped his forehead and replied:
"This tree is too big. It would take too many resources and time to just cut it. Besides, it's pretty old. It's probably full of knags, so it would be a bad material for construction. And we don't want to burn it. Fire would be great and the smoke could irritate your eyes a lot."

They thanked the lumberjack and the master said to the student:

"See this tree now? It's grown big and strong. Ten men could stand around it with spread arms. Be like this tree. It's useless so it's left alone. Many people can find shade and shelter under its leaves. Be like this tree. Useless to the world. If you are useful, the world will exploit you, it will cut you down like the other trees. It will use you in any way possible. You won't have a time to grow and even have a glimpse of who you really are... This tree survived because it's useless and it's the only way you can grow your inner self."
